Reading Comprehension
The core resource for comprehension instruction is the Reading Units of Study through Teachers College.
The units of study in kindergarten include
- We are Readers
- Super Readers
- Bigger Books and Bigger Reading Muscles
- Becoming Avid Readers
Vocabulary
Vocabulary is taught through the units above as well as through whole group read aloud and small group guided reading lessons.
Writing
Written language instruction is based on Kid Writing in the wheel.
Guided Reading and Small Group Instruction
The purpose of guided reading is for students to have time to read and apply strategies and skills that were demonstrated by the teacher during read aloud and shared reading instruction.
Foundational Skills
Project Read is our program that teaches letters and letter sounds through phonics units.

Geometry
- Identify and describe shapes
- Compare and create shapes

- Count the number of objects in each category

Kindergarten Science topics are integrated throughout the Teachers College Reading Workshop read alouds and Responsive Classroom class meetings.
Topic of Study:
Unit - Weather
- Recognize the difference in types of precipitation
- Identify the daily weather
- Identify and describe the four seasons
- Name activities, clothing, etc. that change based on the seasons and weather

- The purpose and need for rules
- Respect for self and others
- Responsibility in the classroom
- Problems and solutions
- Roles of community workers
- Wants and needs
- American holidays and symbols
