Each year the Rose Tree Media School District applies for federal funds through the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities to support the implementation of the Student Assistance Program at Penncrest High School. The results of these and other efforts have reduced the number of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) violations in our schools.
The Student Assistance Program is a useful way of describing systematic methods for helping students who are experiencing personal problems which impede the educational process and healthy growth and development. These barriers to learning include family stressors, depression or suicidal thoughts, use of alcohol, tobacco or illicit drugs and controlled substances, truancy and attendance problems and school failure.
Every Rose Tree Media School District building has a Student Assistance Team. We call the program "S.T.A.R." which stands for "Student Teacher Assistance and Referral." The Student Assistance Team is comprised of a core group of school personnel who have been trained through a state-endorsed program for drug, alcohol, and mental health awareness. SAP is an identification, intervention program, and referral program. SAP is not a counseling program, a treatment program, or a discipline program.
For more information regarding our SAP programs, you may contact Ms. Bernadette Dacanay, Home and School Visitor at 610-627-6197. If you have a Penncrest student, you may contact the SAP Coordinator at 610-627-6216.
